The Misunderstood Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is terribly misuderstood..

This breed seems to have developed a very bad reputation which is very unfair to each individual dog.

IT IS TIME FOR PEOPLE TO REALIZE THAT ITS NOT THE BREED THAT IS THE PROBLEM! PLEASE GIVE OUR STAFFIES A CHANCE!

All puppies, of whatever breed (including Staffies!), are not born to be vicious or aggressive. All puppies are born vulnerable and playful with a natural instinct to learn from its mother and its pack. Therefore puppies that are brought up in caring homes with lots of love, some discipline and lots of exercise, mature to be well socialised and well balanced dogs. However, with any breed of dog, if the puppy does not receive the correct care as it grows up, then the dog may develop behaviour issues as an adult.

THIS IS WHY IT IS VERY UNFAIR TO ASSUME THAT STAFFIES, AS A BREED, ARE NOT GOOD DOGS TO KEEP AS PETS. The way adult dogs behave is a result of how they have been brought up as a puppy.

It is unfortunate that sometimes the wrong type of people keep Staffies and do not look after them properly. The Staffies muscular appearance seems to act as a status symbol amongst young men. This has played a major role in where the breed gets its bad reputation. IN FACT IT IS SIMPLY THE PERSON WHO IS LOOKING AFTER THE DOG THAT IS CAUSING THE BREED TO HAVE A BAD REPUTATION, AND NOT THE DOGS THEMSELVES!

Our Staffies have ended up at the Centre for a variety of different reasons, and through no fault of their own. Some of the reasons range from; owner has too many animals and children in the house to cope with looking after them all, marriage break up, death of an elderly owner, owner going back to full time work, owner having to move into a new property without a garden so is not suitable to look after the dog anymore. These are the same reasons why many other breeds are brought into the centre.

Here at South Godstone Animal Centre, we have successfully rehomed many gorgeous Staffies to loving homes, and to homes with children. All whom have settled in tremendously well. Some of the families have written us lovely letters to say how much they love the dog and their family would not be the same without it!

At the Centre we thoroughly assess each individual dog that comes into our care before we try to rehome it. This is so that we can spend lots of time with each one, to see what their temperament is like and decide which sort of home would best suit each particular dog. This way we are able to match which dog would be most suitable for each family that visits us.
